LONDON, England: The Financial Times, June 27, 2006 - The Dubai International Financial Centre has big ambitions, aiming to play host to 20 per cent of the world's investment funds. It has enacted the collective investment law to provide a legal framework, covering mutual funds, property funds, Islamic funds, hedge funds, and private equity funds. This put it on a par with other leading onshore fund centres, such as London, New York and Hong Kong, said Sandy Shipton, head of asset management at the DIFC. It was unique, he said, because it was designed to fit the fund industry from a wholesale perspective. Shipton has his sights set on the alternative fund industry as an obvious target for what the DIFC has to offer. The industry was fragmented, he said, typically domiciled in the Cayman Islands or a similar tax haven, administered in Dublin or the Channel Islands, with investment management in New York or London.
Herewith, some getaways that minimize driving -- or avoid it altogether. For planning purposes, we've added in $200 per day for dining for a couple (romantic dinners aren't cheap), $100 per day for a family of four heading to a family destination, $150 per day if the family is going urban. Note that airfare and hotel rates change rapidly and vary widely by date, so the exact prices below may not apply when you book. Remember, too, that most ways you travel include some form of fuel -- which this year often means fuel surcharges on airfares and even on a few cruises. Even at $3 per gallon, driving can still be the cheapest way to go. RIDE THE RAILS Taking a train offers a change of pace. A trip from Miami to Charleston, S.C., for instance, is almost 14 hours each way, so you won't do it for a weekend.
THE LONG distance between CBS 3 anchor Alycia Lane and her North Carolina-based husband, Jay Adkins, has caused a serious strain on the couple, who have not spent much time together in recent months, sources tell us. The couple began dating in early 2004 and were married in North Carolina last August, the second marriage for each. Earlier this month, when we reported that Lane, 34, had signed a five-year deal to stay at CBS 3, she told us Adkins, 32, was considering moving here. That's now unlikely, informed sources tell us. Lane, as of late, has not been seen wearing her wedding ring, but has previously said she doesn't always wear it. Lane yesterday morning met with Inqwaster columnist Michael Klein at Starbucks (8th & Walnut) to discuss her marital situation and seek counsel, sources say.

Tropical Storm Alberto, the first named storm of the 2006 hurricane season, is churning Gulf waters with 45 mph winds with higher gusts and drenching rains. Alberto is located about 400 miles west of Key West, Fla., and is moving toward the northwest near 9 mph and a turn toward the north and northeast is expected during the next 24 hours, the National Weather Service reported at 10 a.m. Sunday. Tropical storm force winds stretch outward up to 175 miles east of the center. Some slight strengthening is possible during the next 24 hours. Most forecast models show the system making landfall over northern Florida late Monday or Tuesday and continuing across Florida and up parallel to the East Coast of the U.S. It will be relatively weak in terms of wind, but that doesnt mean its going to be weak in terms of rainfall, senior hurricane specialist Stacy Stewart told the Associated Press on Saturday.
