DUBLIN (AFP) - Charles Haughey, who served three terms as Ireland's prime minister, died Tuesday at his home in Dublin after a long battle with cancer, the government announced. He was 80.
"It is a very sad occasion, and marks the passing of an era," said Ireland's current prime minister Bertie Ahern Tuesday.
Haughey had grown increasingly ill in recent years, having been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
He was taoiseach (prime minister) from December 1979 to June 1981, then again from March 1982 to December 1982 and March 1987 to February 1992. He will be given a state funeral.
Haughey is acknowledged as one of the architects of Ireland's Celtic Tiger boom due to his prudent management of the public finances in the late 1980s.
But his economic reforms have since been overshadowed by revelations of political and financial scandals from his past that came back to haunt him.

In August 2005, Director of the Vehicle Licensing Department David Dixon indicated that Minister for Communications, Works and Infrastructure, the Hon Arden McLean, would be making a policy statement the following week about the licensing of electric cars in the Cayman Islands.
"This is an issue that we have been dealing with for over a year," Mr Dixon said at the time. LSVs, also known as a Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV), are four-wheeled cars that are capable of traveling at a maximum speed of 20 to 25 mph.

Captain Moses Ithamar Kirkconnell, the father of Sister Islands MLA Moses Kirkconnell, passed away Thursday, 15 June, at the age of eighty-two, after a long battle with bone cancer.
Captain Kirkconnell's passing comes just three weeks after he was presented with the Cayman Islands' Certificate and Badge of Honour by H.E. the Governor, Stuart Jack, on 25 May, at a small private ceremony at the home of Moses and Kathy Kirkconnell.
"We have lost a good hero," said long time friend and fellow member of the Cayman Brac and Little Cayman Veteran's and Seaman's Society (V&SS), Holroy Walton.
Captain Kirkconnell, better known as "Captain Junior", was born in Tampa, Florida, on 16 March, 1924.
The eldest of three children born to Captain Moses I Kirkconnell and Alvernie Eden-Kirkconnell, he was a veteran of World War II and a Master Mariner, sailing as Captain in the family shipping business for forty years.
"He was an outstanding man in the community and a dedicated friend of mine and dedicated to the Society.
An influential government advisory panel on Thursday recommended that 11- and 12-year-old girls be routinely vaccinated against the sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer.
Gardasil is the first vaccine specifically designed to prevent cancer. Earlier this month, the Food and Drug Administration approved the vaccine for females between 9 and 26 years old.
It protects against strains of the human papilloma virus, or HPV, which causes cervical cancer.
Researchers at Strong Hospital played a role in developing the vaccine.
“Initially, in vaccine development at the lab level, we were part of developing the initial part of the vaccine," said Dr. Cynthia Rand. “And now we're also looking at opinions about the vaccine from both the perspective of parents and adolescents."
The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices also recommended the shots can be started for girls as young as 9.
Last years Brac Cup Football Tournament certainly proved that the people of Cayman Brac know how to put together a good weekend of top class football.
Building on this success, the 2006 Brac Cup Football Tournament will be held over the weekend of 26 and 27 August in Cayman Brac.
The Brac Cup started out eight years ago with the local nationalities forming teams to represent their respective countries as a tournament of pride for the local labour force. The last two years have seen Future FC from Grand Cayman taking part in the tournament and claiming wins in 2004 and 2005.
The surprise package of last years tournament was the very competitive rookie team from Little Cayman Football Club. Many different nationalities are represented in the club, with Cayman, Jamaica, and Honduras making up the team.
14-year-old Panav Jha made a victorious return to Grand Cayman on Friday 23 June fresh from winning the International Tennis Federation Group 14 tournament in Cuba. In securing the title he beat the number one players from Guatemala and Cuba. Panav has been playing tennis for five years and previous triumphs include the Cayman Islands Tennis Club (CITC) Open Championships where he beat all comers.
Inspiration for the sport comes from the achievements of his father, Gyanendra Jha, who is also an accomplished player.
Head Pro at CITC, Eduardo Torres, has been putting Panav through an intensive training programme including six kilometre road runs and sessions in the gym. Travelling coach, John Goldenberg, is responsible for fine-tuning his tennis skills for tournaments abroad.
